This is my review for Stranger in the Mind by @aspenberrywood
I have always said that I’m not the biggest fan of books in a historical setting but, every so often one will come along and surprise me. Stranger in the Mind was absolutely one of those. I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected.
The atmosphere was so eerie right from the first page and the 1920’s setting was definitely an asset to that. I love when a book can make you uneasy the whole way through.
Right from the start there was already intense information given in regards to the female main character Detective Amelia Dei’s past. I knew going in with it set in the 1920’s, that there would be a lot of misogyny towards Amelia. Especially being a female detective in a massively male dominated field back then. I may or may not have, vocally out loud, gotten angry and shouted at the book. To me that means that the authors have done a good job.
The supernatural element was definitely unique to me. I haven’t read a supernatural book like that before. Especially in regards to Dr Aaron Knight’s gift. His ability was disgusting and it made me feel rather ill. I will say that his past was very sad and that I did have to skim some of it due to personal triggers. Despite his past I don’t believe he could have been redeemed. He was past the point of help.
The world and the characters have been set up to make a pretty good series and can’t wait for book 2. It has made me very nostalgic for the dark and weird books I use to read. I really need to get back to that.
I rated Stranger in the Mind 4 stars
Trigger Warnings: SA, domestic violence, misogyny and homophobia.
